What is the livelihood calculation?
You would like to apply for a residence title or naturalisation? Then you generally need to secure your livelihood independently. If you are not sure whether your income is sufficient, you can use the free livelihood calculation. This is a non-binding Quick Check.
A secured livelihood means: you can permanently pay for housing, food, clothing, personal needs and health insurance through your own regular income.
The livelihood is considered not secured if you receive public funds such as citizen''s allowance (Buergergeld), social assistance or asylum seeker benefits, or if you are entitled to them.
The calculation also includes partners you live with and children up to age 24. The check is done online. You receive an immediate result. Your data is not stored and not transmitted to the State Office for Immigration (LEA).

Good to know
Are you only missing a small amount for full subsistence? Then this is generally not a problem. This so-called de minimis threshold protects you from rejection due to minor gaps.
Soweit festgestellt wird, dass mangels hinreichendem Einkommen lediglich in geringfügigem Umfang ein Anspruch auf Sozialleistungen besteht, ist dies grundsätzlich unbeachtlich (Bagatellgrenze).

If your average gross income over the last 6 months reaches the lump sum, your subsistence is legally deemed secured. The law treats this as if no further review were necessary. For example: 3,646.65 euros gross per month for single persons from 2024.

For naturalisation and the settlement permit under Section 28(2), the most favourable treatment principle applies. If you can secure your own subsistence, German family members do not count towards the household unit. You do not then have to cover their needs with your income.
