Apprenticeships and traineeships for foreigners in Germany
Apprenticeships and traineeships in Germany
Requirements
One must have at least an intermediate school certificate or a comparable qualification.
According to the latest statistics, the number of people who started trainings or apprenticeships in 2017 was 547,000. Nevertheless, almost 30,000 positions remained vacant.
For this reason, it is often worth looking abroad. Many young people worldwide welcome the opportunity to get an apprenticeship in Germany and are willing to get involved in a local company. The training company itself benefits from the motivated foreign trainees and the intercultural perspective.
The company is, if applicable, registered with the IHK (Chamber of Commerce and Industry).
Proof of basic knowledge of the German language (see notes).
A signed training contract and a detailed training plan are available.

For most training occupations, minimum language requirements apply at A2 level, B1 for regulated health occupations. In deviation from this, the employer can set their own requirements for the required language level of the foreign trainees.
If, in addition, a language course is part of the training or precedes it, or if the training (partially) takes place in another language, reduced prerequisites can be applied.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are there any particular restrictions?
Yes, the Federal Employment Agency carries out a priority check. In order to prevent "negative effects" on the German labour market, it is to be checked whether someone of suitable preferential status (suitably qualified German nationals) would also be available for vocational training. If this is the case, the foreigner can be refused the position.
How long does the visa process take?
The total duration of the procedure depends on various factors. In different countries of origin, waiting times vary because the workload of diplomatic missions and consular posts varies. It is also relevant whether there are special features in the specific case. VISARIGHT does its best to ensure that the procedure is successful as quickly as possible.
Does a contract already have to be available?
Yes, a signed training contract is required for the application. VISARIGHT can generate all other documents for you.
Is a visa even required?
Citizens of the member states of the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland do not require a visa.
Citizens of other countries need a visa. Assistance with visa applications is an essential part of our service.
Must accommodation be provided?
No, unlike holiday employment, the provision of accommodation is uncommon during vocational training. In certain cases, however, it can still be relevant.
Must a minimum wage be paid?
No, trainees are not entitled to a minimum wage. Nevertheless, the commitment within the framework of the training is to be remunerated appropriately. As a rule, foreign trainees must prove that they have covered their living costs by €800 per month. Although this amount does not have to be derived exclusively from the training compensation and can also be reduced by up to €300 (e.g. by providing board and/or lodging), this can be - depending on the working hours - a reasonable guide value.
What is the money-back guarantee?
If the training visa is unexpectedly refused by the authorities and entry is not granted, VISARIGHT offers a full money-back guarantee.
