As a British national who was resident in Germany before 31.12.2020, you will receive a residence document-GB.

What is the residence document-GB for British nationals?
You are a British national and moved your residence to Germany by 31.12.2020 at the latest? Then you have a right of residence derived from EU law with simplified requirements.
The authority must issue you a residence document-GB ex officio. You do not need to do anything extra. The document is generally valid for 10 years and certifies your right of entry and residence.
With the residence document-GB, you may pursue any gainful employment. This applies to both employment and self-employment.
Family members without British nationality can also receive the residence document-GB if they do not hold the nationality of an EU or EEA state.
Requirements
Who qualifies?
- You are a British national (British Citizen) and do not simultaneously hold German nationality or the nationality of another EU or EEA state
- You are a family member of a British national without British nationality and do not hold the nationality of an EU or EEA state
Additional requirements
- You moved your residence to Germany by 31.12.2020 at the latest.
- Your current main residence is in Berlin.
- A personal appointment is required. For families, all family members (spouse and minor children) must attend together.

Gather all required documents: passport, passport photo, registration certificate and depending on your situation further proof
Attend the appointment in person with all family members and bring all documents
Done! The authority will issue you the residence document-GB ex officio. It is generally valid for 10 years

Good to know
You do not need an application procedure for your right of residence. Your right exists automatically by operation of law. The GB residence document is only proof of it.

Are both parents beneficiaries under the Withdrawal Agreement? Then you do not need joint custody. This also applies if one parent is German.

For family reunification, you are treated like holders of other residence titles. With a permanent right of residence, you are placed on equal footing with holders of an EU long-term residence permit.

After the appointment, it takes approximately 4 weeks until the residence document for UK nationals is issued as an electronic residence title and can be collected.
