Transfer Residence Permit to New Passport

How do you transfer your residence permit to a new passport?

You have a valid residence permit and received a new passport? Then you should have your residence permit reissued. Your current residence permit still refers to the old passport.

You can have the transfer done at a citizens'' office (Buergeramt) or at the State Office for Immigration. At the citizens'' office this is possible if you still have your old passport with the valid residence permit, the passport is complete, the residence permit was issued by the State Office for Immigration Berlin or last transferred by a Berlin citizens'' office, and no more than 6 months have passed between the expiry of the old passport and the issuance of the new one.

Important: Is your residence permit valid for only 6 months or less? Then please come for the extension first. This saves you fees and time.

Note: If you would like to travel abroad in the meantime, take your old passport, the residence permit and the new passport with you. However, check the entry requirements of the destination country beforehand.
