Where can you get social counselling on benefits and family benefits?
The Welcome Centre Berlin offers you free social counselling. It is the advice centre of the Berlin Senate Commissioner for Integration and Migration.
The social counsellors help you with all questions about social support benefits and basic subsistence benefits. This also includes family benefits such as child benefit and parental allowance, advance maintenance payments, BAföG, and housing benefit.
The counselling team works individually and multilingually. Interpreters are available.
Requirements
Who qualifies?
- Social counselling is open to everyone. It is aimed at immigrants, newcomers, people without a German passport, people with a migration background, and their family members.
Additional requirements
- You do not need to meet any special requirements.

Good to know
Are you a national of the EU, the EEA, or Switzerland? Then you can receive child benefit. This applies regardless of whether you have a residence permit or settlement permit.
Staatsangehörige der EU und des EWR sowie Staatsangehörige der Schweiz können Kindergeld unabhängig davon erhalten, ob sie eine NE oder AE besitzen.

Do you receive housing allowance and still have a secured income? Then the housing allowance does not harm you for the residence title. The authority does not count it against you.
Allerdings ist es unschädlich, wenn jemand, der über hinreichendes und gesichertes Einkommen nach unserer Berechnung verfügt, und damit die Erteilungsvoraussetzungen nach § 5 Abs. 1 Nr. 1 erfüllt, Wohngeld beanspruchen kann und auch tatsächlich bezieht.

The child supplement does not count as a harmful social benefit for your residence title. The authority includes it as other income in the needs calculation. This helps you with securing your livelihood.
Dennoch ist der Bezug des Kinderzuschlags gemäß § 2 Abs. 3 Nr. 2 als unschädlich anzusehen und als sonstiges Einkommen in der Bedarfsberechnung miteinzubeziehen.
