How do you get a cost coverage declaration as a self-payer?
You are a refugee and your asylum procedure is completed? Then as a status-changed person, you may still be living in an accommodation of the State Office for Refugee Affairs (LAF).
If you find a job, earn money and no longer receive benefits from the Jobcenter or social welfare office, you must contribute to the costs of your accommodation. You are then a self-payer.
You will receive a cost coverage declaration from the LAF. This states your personal contribution. After that, you will receive a monthly invoice from the LAF for the amount to be paid.
Requirements
Who qualifies?
- You are a status-changed person under SGB II or SGB XII, live in a contractually bound accommodation of the LAF and no longer have a benefit entitlement due to your income.
Additional requirements
- You have received a decision from the responsible benefit provider (Jobcenter or district office) in which benefits for securing your livelihood have been denied due to your income. You need an appointment at the LAF.
How to apply
Have ready the decision in which your livelihood benefits were denied due to your income
Book an appointment at the State Office for Refugee Affairs (LAF)
Bring all required documents to the appointment -- for an ongoing case you need fewer documents
Wait until the LAF has reviewed your documents and calculated how your income affects your benefits
Done! You will receive a cost coverage declaration with your personal contribution and will receive a monthly invoice
Good to know
Are you living in shared or emergency accommodation? Then you can apply for a change of your residence assignment. You must present an open-ended rental contract for your own apartment.

You can have your residence assignment changed if the accommodation costs at the new location are lower. You need a binding offer for an open-ended main tenancy agreement for this.
