The State Office for Immigration (Landesamt für Einwanderung, LEA) is the central immigration authority for all of Berlin and operates from several locations, each responsible for different topics. The Keplerstraße location handles everything related to employment as a skilled worker, research, training, recognition, studies, and language courses. The Friedrich-Krause-Ufer location (also the postal address) processes residence permits on family and humanitarian grounds, as well as tolerated stays (Duldungen) and permission to stay pending an asylum decision (Aufenthaltsgestattungen). Naturalizations are handled through the Sellerstraße location. For family members the following applies: if your residence permit was issued at a particular location, that same location is usually also responsible for your family. Companies based in Berlin additionally use the Business Immigration Service (BIS) when hiring skilled workers. To find out which location is responsible for you, it's best to check directly on the official website.
