In Hamburg, several offices share responsibility for immigration matters: The Amt für Migration (Office for Migration) of the Behörde für Inneres und Sport centrally handles humanitarian residence permits, initial reception of refugees, tolerated-stay permits (Duldungen), and naturalizations. For your first residence permit for work, vocational training, or self-employment, the Hamburg Welcome Center for Professionals on Süderstraße in Hammerbrook is the right place. Many matters involving existing residence permits, however, go through the Ausländerdienststellen (immigration service offices) of the local Hamburg Service branches in the city districts — which location is responsible for you depends on where you live.
