Do you automatically receive a Residence Document-GB as a British national?

You are a British national and relocated your residence to Germany before 1 January 2021? Then you have a right of residence that derives from EU law. The authority issues you the Residence Document-GB ex officio. That means: the authority does it itself. You do not have to submit an application.

The document certifies your right to enter and reside in Germany. It is normally valid for 10 years. With it, you may carry out any gainful employment. This applies to employment with an employer as well as to self-employed activity.

Family members without British citizenship can also obtain the Residence Document-GB. The prerequisite is that they relocated their residence to Germany no later than 31 December 2020. They must also not hold the citizenship of an EU or EEA state. EEA states include Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.

You need a primary residence in Berlin. If you only have a secondary residence in Berlin, you must contact the immigration authority of your primary residence. You must appear in person with an appointment. For families, all family members must appear together. This applies to spouses and minor children. Note: The Residence Document-GB only applies to British nationals with the entry "British Citizen" in their passport. In addition, you must not also hold German citizenship or that of an EU or EEA state alongside your British citizenship.
