Transfer Residence Permit to a New Passport
Got a new passport? Get your residence permit transferred quickly and easily.
At a glance
How do you transfer your residence permit to your new passport?
You got a new passport? Then you should have your residence permit reissued. This is called a transfer. It's necessary because your residence permit still references your old passport.
You apply for the transfer in person, with an appointment. Your main residence must be in Berlin. You can have the transfer done at any Berlin Bürgeramt (citizens' office). For this, all of the following conditions must be met: You have your old passport with the valid residence permit with you. The residence permit was issued by the Berlin State Office for Immigration (Landesamt für Einwanderung Berlin) or was last transferred by a Berlin Bürgeramt. Your old passport is complete. No more than 6 months have passed between the expiry date of your old passport and the issue of your new one. You haven't left Germany for more than 6 months in a row. If any one of these conditions isn't met, the State Office for Immigration is responsible — for example, if your old passport is no longer available.
Note: If your residence permit is valid for at most 6 more months, transferring it doesn't make sense. Go directly to the State Office for Immigration to extend it instead. That saves you fees and time.
Want to travel abroad before you have your new residence permit? Then take your old passport, your residence permit, and your new passport with you. That way you can re-enter Germany. Note: Different rules may apply in the country you're traveling to. Check with the embassy or consulate of the destination country in good time.
Requirements
Who qualifies?
- You can have the transfer done at a Berlin Bürgeramt if your main residence is in Berlin, your old passport is complete and contains a valid residence permit, that permit was issued by the Berlin State Office for Immigration (Landesamt für Einwanderung Berlin) or was last transferred by a Berlin Bürgeramt, no more than 6 months lie between the expiry date of your old passport and the issue of the new one, and you haven't left Germany for more than 6 months in a row.
- If you don't meet one of these requirements (e.g. your old passport is missing or your residence permit was not issued by the Berlin State Office for Immigration), you must have the transfer done directly at the State Office for Immigration.
Additional requirements
- You must appear in person with an appointment — whether at the Bürgeramt or at the State Office for Immigration.
How to apply
First check whether you meet all the conditions for the Bürgeramt: main residence in Berlin, old passport complete and on hand, residence permit issued by the Berlin State Office for Immigration or last transferred by a Berlin Bürgeramt, no more than 6 months between the expiry date of your old passport and the issue of the new one, and not absent from Germany for more than 6 months in a row — if any condition is missing, contact the State Office for Immigration directly
Consider whether a transfer makes sense: if your residence permit is valid for at most 6 more months, go straight to the State Office for Immigration to extend it — that saves fees and time
Book a personal appointment at a Berlin Bürgeramt (or at the State Office for Immigration if you don't meet the conditions for the Bürgeramt)
Gather all the required documents: new passport, old passport, residence permit (electronic residence title with supplementary sheet, or the residence title glued into your old passport), and a current biometric passport photo — check the State Office for Immigration website in good time about the rules on digital photo submission that apply from 1 May 2025; if your passport was stolen: bring the police report along
Attend the appointment in person and bring all the documents with you
Done! You receive your residence permit transferred to your new passport

Good to know
Do you have an EU long-term residence permit from another EU country? This foreign title cannot be transferred into your new passport by the Berlin authority. Only your German residence permit will be transferred.
