How do you get a residence permit for in-company training or continuing education?
You would like to do vocational training or continuing education in Germany? Then you can get a residence permit for it. Normally the authority must grant it to you. However, the State Office for Immigration (Landesamt für Einwanderung, LEA) first needs the consent of the Federal Employment Agency (BA). The LEA requests this from the BA itself. You do not have to do anything for this.
The residence permit is valid for the entire duration of your training or continuing education. If you also take a language course, the validity period extends accordingly. With the permit, you may also work up to 20 hours per week. This work does not have to be related to your training. However, self-employed activity is prohibited with this permit.
For in-company training, you do not need a completed vocational qualification. So you can also get the permit for an internship or traineeship. If you are doing qualified vocational training, you may also attend a German language course beforehand. This course may last a maximum of 6 months. For in-company continuing education, on the other hand, you need a completed qualification. This can be vocational training of at least two years. It can also be advanced school-based training, for example after the Abitur. Or you have completed studies at a university of applied sciences or a university. The continuing education permit is particularly aimed at foreign doctors. With it, they can pursue specialist medical training if it corresponds to the continuing education regulations of the State Medical Associations. Other medical continuing education within a government scholarship program or a continuing education plan reviewed by the BA is also possible.
You must also meet certain requirements. You need sufficient money to live and health insurance in Germany. For training, you must have at least 959.00 euros per month available (as of 2026). For continuing education, it is at least 992.00 euros per month (as of 2026). Foreign health insurance is generally not sufficient. You must also have your primary residence in Berlin. A secondary residence is not enough.
You submit the application online. This is possible at the earliest 4 months before your current residence title expires. Before submitting, you must pay the processing fee. You can pay by credit card (Visa, Mastercard) or PayPal. After submitting, you receive a confirmation as a PDF. This shows that your current residence title remains valid. Important: This does not apply if you have a Schengen visa (C-visa). If you have entered from a state favored under § 41 of the Residence Ordinance and have been in Germany for less than 91 days, your stay is considered permitted until a decision is made. You may then already begin a language course. However, you may not yet take up the training itself. Note: Are your spouse or your children living with you in Berlin and also need a residence permit? Enter them directly in your application. The LEA will then contact you regarding their residence permits.
Requirements
Who qualifies?
- You can apply for the residence permit for in-company training if you have your primary residence in Berlin.
- You can apply for the residence permit for in-company continuing education if you have your primary residence in Berlin and can already show a completed vocational qualification — either vocational or school-based training of at least two years, advanced school-based vocational training (e.g. after the Abitur), or training at a university of applied sciences or a university.
Additional requirements
- You need sufficient money for your living expenses and health insurance in Germany (statutory or comparable private — foreign health insurance is not sufficient). For in-company training, that is at least 959 euros per month (11,508 euros per year), for in-company continuing education at least 992 euros per month (11,904 euros per year) — as of 2026.
- The State Office for Immigration (LEA) obtains the consent of the Federal Employment Agency internally as part of the application review — you do not have to do this yourself.
- You must provide a current email address and check your spam folder regularly, as the LEA contacts you via email. For online application, you must agree to electronic payment; you can pay by credit card (Visa or Mastercard) or PayPal.

- Sie erhalten ein PDF-Dokument als Bestätigung Ihres Antrags. Damit wird bescheinigt, dass Ihr aktueller Aufenthaltstitel (nationales D-Visum oder Aufenthaltserlaubnis) über das bisherige Gültigkeitsdatum hinaus im Bundesgebiet weiter gültig bleibt. (Dies gilt nicht, wenn Sie ein Schengen-Visum (C-Visum) für einen kurzfristigen Aufenthalt besitzen.)
- Für Angehörige der nach § 41 Aufenthaltsverordnung (siehe Abschnitt „Weiterführende Informationen“) begünstigten Staaten gilt: Sie sind vor weniger als 91 Tagen eingereist und beantragen nun erstmals eine Aufenthaltserlaubnis? Dann gilt Ihr Aufenthalt in Deutschland bis zur Entscheidung über Ihren Antrag als erlaubt. Sie können damit schon einen Sprachkurs beginnen. Die Aufnahme der gewünschten Aus- oder Weiterbildung ist jedoch noch nicht gestattet.
- Bitte speichern Sie sich dieses Dokument unbedingt ab und drucken es zudem auch nach Möglichkeit aus.
- Bei Antragstellung durch Bevollmächtigte: Vollmacht mit Angabe des Verfahrensgegenstands
- Passkopien (in Farbe)
Es werden Kopien von folgenden Seiten Ihres Passes benötigt:
- immer: Datenseiten (mit Ihrem Foto und den Daten zu Ihrer Person)
- wenn Sie eingereist sind und erstmals eine Aufenthaltserlaubnis beantragen, zusätzlich: Einreisestempel sowie Visum für die Einreise oder Aufenthaltstitel eines anderen EU-Staates im Pass (wenn vorhanden)
- Wenn Sie bereits eine Aufenthaltserlaubnis zur Aus- und Weiterbildung oder einen anderen deutschen Aufenthaltstitel besitzen: Kopie Ihres Aufenthaltstitels
- Nachweis über Krankenversicherung in Deutschland
- bei einer gesetzlichen Krankenversicherung: elektronische Gesundheitskarte (Kopie Vorder- und Rückseite) oder aktuelle Bestätigung der Krankenversicherung
- bei einer privaten Krankenversicherung: Bescheinigung des Versicherers über Umfang und Kosten der Versicherung nach § 257 Abs. 2a SGB V. Bitte weisen Sie Ihren Versicherer darauf hin, dass Sie die Bescheinigung für einen Aufenthaltstitel zur Aus- und Weiterbildung brauchen.
- Nachweis über den Hauptwohnsitz in Berlin
- Bescheinigung über die Anmeldung der Wohnung (Meldebestätigung) oder
- Mietvertrag und Einzugsbestätigung des Vermieters
- Wenn Ihr monatliches Einkommen aus der Aus- oder Weiterbildung unter dem BAföG-Förderungshöchstsatz liegt (siehe Abschnitt „Voraussetzungen“), sind folgende ergänzende Nachweise erforderlich:
- bei erstmaliger Erteilung: zum Beispiel Sparguthaben bei einer deutschen Bank / Verpflichtungserklärung auf amtlichem Vordruck / Stipendienbescheinigung / notariell beglaubigte Erklärung der Eltern, für die Dauer der Aus- oder Weiterbildung den Lebensunterhalt zu sichern mit Nachweisen über das Einkommen der Eltern in den letzten sechs Monaten, Arbeitsvertrag über Nebenjob
- bei Verlängerung: alternativ auch Kontoauszüge der letzten sechs Monate / Nachweise über sonstiges Einkommen
- Nachweis über die beabsichtigte Aus- oder Weiterbildung:
Zum Beispiel Arbeitsvertrag, Ausbildungsvertrag, Stipendium - Bei einer betrieblichen Weiterbildung: Nachweis der Qualifikation
Zeugnisse über die bisherige berufliche Ausbildung, zum Beispiel Hochschulzeugnis oder Zertifikat über abgeschlossene Berufsausbildung - Formular "Erklärung zum Beschäftigungsverhältnis" (ausgefüllt)

Good to know
If you meet all the requirements and the Federal Employment Agency has given its approval, the authority must grant you the residence permit. The authority has no discretion in this matter. Only in exceptional cases may it deviate from this.

During your training, you may switch to a different residence title at any time. The requirement is that you meet the conditions for that title. The only exception is temporary employment under the Employment Regulation.
§ 16a Abs. 1 S. 2 den jederzeitigen Wechsel in einen anderen Aufenthaltstitel, zu dem die Erteilungsvoraussetzungen erfüllt werden. Hiervon ausgenommen ist lediglich die Erteilung der Aufenthaltserlaubnis nach § 19c Abs. 1 für eine in der BeschV geregelte vorübergehende Beschäftigung.

If your educational institution is responsible for the loss of your residence title, you have a legal entitlement. You receive 6 months to apply at another institution. If you find a new place, your title remains valid.

Apply for residence permit for in-company training and continuing education
If your application is approved, you will receive an appointment. A residence permit as a sticker can be issued on site at the appointment. If issued as an electronic residence title (eAT), it takes 4 to 6 weeks until it can be collected.
