How do you register for the naturalisation test?

Do you want to apply for German citizenship? Then you must prove your knowledge of the legal and social order and the way of life in Germany. You can prove this knowledge, for example, by successfully passing the naturalisation test (Einbürgerungstest).

The State Office for Immigration (LEA) is responsible for naturalisations in Berlin. It also accepts other proofs. You will find more information in the service "Naturalisation – application for award of German citizenship" under Further information.

Exempt from the test are: minor applicants under 16 years of age, persons unable to act, and naturalisation applicants who cannot meet the test requirements due to a physical, mental, or emotional illness or disability, or due to their age. These limitations must be proven by medical certificates.

This is how the procedure works: Schedule an appointment to register for the naturalisation test. To register, you need a participant registration form (Teilnehmermeldebogen). The Volkshochschule (community education centre) provides the form during the consultation and you fill it in there. Then pay the fee. After payment, you will receive a booking confirmation. Bring this confirmation with you on the test day.

Important: You do not take the test on the registration day. The available exam dates will be communicated to you by the Volkshochschule at registration.
