Where can you get free legal advice on migration law?
The Welcome Centre Berlin offers you free legal advice on all questions of migration law. It is the advice centre of the Berlin Senate Commissioner for Integration and Migration.
The legal advisors help you with questions on entry, residence and free movement law, asylum law and access to the labour market. They also advise you on threatened deportation and on questions of naturalisation and nationality law.
The service is also available to people without legal residence status. All consultations are confidential. The advisors are bound by professional secrecy.
In special cases of threatened termination of residence, proceedings may be initiated through the Berlin Hardship Commission. The aim is then to secure your residence.
Requirements
Who qualifies?
- The legal advice is open to everyone. It is aimed at immigrants, newcomers, people without a German passport, people with a migration background and their relatives. People without legal residence status can also use the advice.

- You do not need to meet any special requirements.

Good to know
Through the Hardship Commission, you can receive a residence permit. The authority may deviate from the normal requirements. Existing bars to issuance can also be overcome.
Eine Aufenthaltserlaubnis nach § 23a kann einem Ausländer auch abweichend von den im AufenthG vorgesehenen Erteilungs- und Verlängerungsvoraussetzungen sowie abweichend von den §§ 10 und 11 erteilt werden.

As long as the Hardship Commission is handling your case, you must not be deported. You will receive toleration status (Duldung) for this period. The toleration status is generally valid for twelve months.
Eine Rückführung bleibt während der Befassung des Falls durch die Härtefallkommission ausgeschlossen.
