§ 6 StAG: Acquisition by Adoption

If you are adopted by a German citizen as a child, you automatically receive German citizenship. Requirement: you were under 18 years old at the time of the adoption application.
The acquisition of citizenship also applies to your descendants.
For foreign adoption:
If the adoption is based on a foreign decision, two conditions must be met:
- The parent-child relationship with your previous parents must have ceased through the adoption.
- The adoption must be equivalent to a German adoption.
If these conditions are not met, a conversion of the adoption under Section 3 of the Adoption Effects Act can take place. Then the same rule applies.
Mit der nach den deutschen Gesetzen wirksamen Annahme als Kind durch einen Deutschen erwirbt das Kind, das im Zeitpunkt des Annahmeantrags das achtzehnte Lebensjahr noch nicht vollendet hat, die deutsche Staatsangehörigkeit. Der Erwerb der deutschen Staatsangehörigkeit erstreckt sich auf die Abkömmlinge des Kindes. Beruht die Annahme als Kind auf einer ausländischen Entscheidung, setzt der Erwerb der deutschen Staatsangehörigkeit voraus, dass das Eltern-Kind-Verhältnis des Kindes zu seinen bisherigen Eltern durch die Annahme erloschen ist und das Annahmeverhältnis einem nach den deutschen Sachvorschriften begründeten Annahmeverhältnis gleichsteht. Liegen die Voraussetzungen des Satzes 3 nicht vor und wird eine Umwandlung des Annahmeverhältnisses nach § 3 des Adoptionswirkungsgesetzes ausgesprochen, gilt Satz 1 entsprechend.
